DDP / DDU

Introduction

Tradewise DDP & DDU Services: Choosing Who Owns the Risk

There’s a question every seller shipping into the UAE has to answer eventually: do you want your buyer opening that box with nothing left to pay, or are you prepared for them to sort their own customs? So, in a nutshell, that’s what DDP and DDU are really about: getting the choice right. Not only does it cost you money, but it may cost that customer on the other end their trust.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) – basically, the seller that’s you or Tradewise in this case, acting as your agent takes all liability. Everything is included in one package: freight, export formalities, Dubai Customs clearance (5% customs duty), delivered to the buyer’s door (5% VAT). All the buyer has to do is accept the shipment. No invoice in 2 subsequent weeks, no package mysteriously held up somewhere, and no awkward call to someone at the company who was doing a job being asked why they received an additional duty bill.

The new, more formal term for DDU is now DAP (Delivered at Place), though the old terms continue to be bandied about in the contracts & quotes; as with these Incoterms, the seller gets goods to the named destination, but the buyer takes over where customs clearance occurs, and duty & VAT are paid by the buyer along with any Mirsal 2 filings if importing into the UAE or the own country system if it’s an export from here.

One is not “better” than the other; simplicity or your buyers’ tolerance for friction (i.e. no TS vs any TS) depends on who is best positioned to handle the paperwork. We guide you in selecting the right one, then we operate it.

What We Manage

No matter which Incoterm you pick, someone has to do all the work: file the declaration, compute the landed cost, pay what is due, and release the shipment. That’s us.

  • DDP Execution: Full payment of duty and VAT on your behalf, submitted via Mirsal 2 through the Dubai Trade Portal
  • DDU/DAP execution: delivery to named destination with clean handover of customs responsibility to buyer
  • Assessment of Landed Cost before quoting to a customer
  • HS code classification as per the 12-digit GCC Integrated Customs Tariff
  • Coordination through Jebel Ali, DXB or DWC depending on shipment type
  • Transparent records to document exactly who paid when and what

One of the most commonly encountered (and costly) pitfalls we see is getting the declaration type wrong by filing an import-to-local instead of a free zone transfer, for example. We can best ensure the appropriate declaration type is picked the first time, every time.

How We Run DDP & DDU Shipments

On paper, the mechanics appear easy: select a term, ship the items. In practice, the gap between a smooth DDP delivery and a stuck one usually comes down to whether the paperwork was filed before the cargo showed up, not after.

  • Filing of the Mirsal 2 declaration before arrival; therefore, inspection starts before the vessel or flight arrives
  • The ability to calculate duty and VAT in real-time, so that your actual quote landed cost is indeed accurate
  • For export/import shipments, dedication to work directly with Dubai Customs on different times for release
  • An easy-to-read and understandable handoff of the DDU/DAP shipments so the buyer knows the exact amount they owe
  • Delivery confirmation for every shipment to named destination
  • Catching classification or documentation problems before they become a hold

Pre-arrival filing may seem like a small thing, but it often makes the difference between cargo clearing in hours and cargo sitting at the terminal for days.

DDP/DDU Across the Shipment Lifecycle

Selecting between DDP and DDU is not a one-off decision; review it based on the buyer, destination, and the value of the move.

  • Incoterm selection advisory before the sales contract is executed
  • Model landed costs so that prices mirror true delivered cost
  • Filing for declaration and handling duty/VAT according to the term selected
  • Co-ordination of your customs clearance at Jebel Ali, DXB or DWC
  • Documentation after the delivery confirming who paid how much, for your own records

After delivery, we send a tidy paper trail that lasts, whether you’re handling costs yourself or need to prove compliance later.

Industries We Support

DDP and DDU decisions carry more weight for equipment that’s expensive, time-sensitive, or going to a buyer with limited import experience.

  • Data center and cloud infrastructure
  • Telecom and networking hardware
  • Medical devices and laboratory technology
  • AI, GPU, high-performance computing systems
  • Enterprise IT & specialized industrial equipment

DDP typically wins with those buyers who know nothing about UAE import procedures. For an established importer with their own broker, DDU may be a more cost-effective and faster option.

Business Value

Your choice of Incoterm ultimately determines three things: your margin, your customer’s experience, and the balance of risk between you both. Getting it right and executing it cleanly protects all three.

  • Predictable landed cost baked into your prices, not discovered after you ship
  • No surprise duty bills arriving on your buyer’s desk with DDP.
  • Swifter clearance of appropriately filed Mirsal 2 declarations
  • Define the risks clearly so both parties know what they are taking on.
  • One party executes, whichever term you used.
  • Documentation that acts as a backup if costs or compliance are ever challenged

Whether you’re optimizing for buyer experience or your own cash flow, the right Incoterm, done correctly, is what makes goods keep moving, whether you optimize the buyer experience and relationships intact.
