Importing to Peru With TradeWise

Peru has one of the most stable economies in South America. Its mining companies, banks, telecom operators and government offices need a steady supply of IT equipment. Importing to Peru needs a tax number, a customs declaration with SUNAT and, for telecom gear, an MTC homologation certificate. One missed step can stop your cargo. We act as your importer of record Peru partner and manage the filings for you.

Mandatory RUC and DAM Declaration for Every Commercial Shipment to Peru

Every commercial shipment to Peru needs a DAM, the customs declaration of goods, filed with SUNAT.

SUNAT customs, the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration, clears all imports.

Importers must hold a RUC, the Peruvian tax number. For larger commercial shipments, a licensed customs agent files the DAM for the importer. To import into Peru, duty, VAT and any VAT advance are paid before the goods are released.

Documents and Pre-Shipment Checks

South American customs authorities review data before the cargo arrives. Port delays happen when one document is missing or does not match. That is where TradeWise steps in. Our specialists check MTC certificates, origin records and tariff classification before your shipment leaves, keeping your Peru import customs clearance on schedule.

Unique Pain Points and Challenges Facing Peru

These five issues slow down most shipments.

Restricted telecom goods

SUNAT treats telecom equipment without an MTC certificate as restricted goods.

VAT advance

The VAT advance adds to the cash needed at clearance.

Strict deadlines

The DAM must be filed within set days of unloading, or the goods face penalties.

Mountain logistics

Cargo from Callao climbs the Andes by road. Plan extra days outside Lima.

Phone rules

Mobile devices need valid IMEI numbers and an MTC certificate before import.

Most Important for Tech Imports

MTC Homologation

The MTC, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, homologates telecom equipment under the Telecommunications Law. Equipment that connects to public networks or emits radio signals needs a certificate before import. This covers phones, routers, antennas, smartwatches and wireless devices. Requests go through the VUCE single window.

TradeWise compiles and submits the full MTC file for you to support Peru import customs clearance. Plan extra time for approval.

SUNAT Customs

This agency handles imports, exports and tax. It collects duty, IGV and the VAT advance.

VUCE

Peru's foreign trade single window, used for permits and certificates from other agencies.

Customs Agents

Licensed agents file DAMs for importers. The importer stays responsible for what is declared.

Peru's Trade at a Glance

Peru is a growing economy built on copper, gold, fishing, farm exports and services. Callao is the main seaport, with the new Chancay port serving trade with Asia. Lima's Jorge Chávez Airport is the main air cargo gateway.

Its main trading partners include China, the United States, Brazil and South Korea.

Telecom permits, VAT advances and mountain routes are real hurdles. With the right partner, shipments stay compliant, efficient, and cost-effective, whether you import tech goods or export dual-use products.
