Physical inspections
Many shipments are selected for physical review at the port or border.
El Salvador is a growing tech and services market in Central America, and its offices, call centers and telecom networks need a steady flow of IT equipment. Importing to El Salvador requires a local importer with a tax number (NIT), declarations filed through the national customs system and SIGET approval for radio and telecom gear. Every shipment you import into El Salvador is checked against these records. One missed step can lead to holds. TradeWise acts as your importer of record El Salvador and manages the filings for you.

Every radio and network device needs SIGET clearance before it is imported for sale or use.
SIGET, the Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecomunicaciones, regulates the radio spectrum and telecom equipment in El Salvador. Devices that use radio frequencies or connect to public networks need SIGET authorization before commercial import. Approval is based on FCC or European standards, and no local lab testing is needed. Once issued, the authorization does not expire.

What Salvadoran Customs Checks Before Your Goods Are Released
The General Directorate of Customs (DGA), part of the Ministry of Finance, clears all imports under the Central American Uniform Customs Code (CAUCA). Duty depends on the Central American tariff code of each item, and many IT products enter at 0% under the WTO Information Technology Agreement. Goods that qualify under CAFTA-DR can also enter duty-free. IVA of 13% is then charged on top. Are you wondering how to import laptops and servers to El Salvador? Start with these four checks.
